Karen Dahl – Aquaponics in the city

Aquaponics is an essential part of permaculture in a built up environment.  Why?  Because it is a fun and more sustainable contribution to standard food production including hydroponics which is a one-way rather than cyclical system.  Aquaponics can be on a miniature scale to a full commercial set-up but in all cases has the advantage of little water usage, about a 1/10th of permaculture on land.  We will put together miniature aquaponics systems with 5- 6 people per team.  The materials will be obtained from The Green Shed (for the fish tanks and grow beds) and online hardware store (for the piping and pump).   If participants are prepared to pay for the components they can take home what is constructed together.  The miniature aquaponics systems are an attractive and useful addition to a work environment.   They can also be used as a teaching tool for schools and enhance a home environment.
