Karen Dahl – Beekeeping in the city
Beekeeping on an amateur scale is amazingly satisfying and worthwhile. If we could encourage every person with a backyard to get at least one beehive that would be outstanding for our bees. We are in an exceptional position in Australia because unlike any other country in the world we have not got the Verroa mite which is devastating bee colonies. It’s essential that we become savvy about how bees contribute to suburban agriculture and what we can do to support our bee population. Contribution to the welfare of bees needs to be from the ground up i.e. it can only be appreciated and understood through first hand experience. I will talk about and demonstrate how I have set up two beehives in my back garden over the past year. They are strong and healthy and it has been a successful enterprise through trial and error.
