Sam Nishanian – Permaway – A new model of governance.

What is the fairest and most efficient way to manage a community? This is the seemingly simple question that Sam Nishanian set out to answer over 6 years ago. Sam is a writer and permaculturist with a passion for sustainability and social justice. He has a degree in computer engineering and over a decade of corporate experience working as a project manager. With a spate of international movements dedicated to environmental protection, social justice and economic sustainability many have turned to community as an answer. But are they just trying to recreate the past? Is it even possible to create a fair and well functioning community that isn’t a utopian fantasy, isolationism or tribal romanticism? In an attempt to answer these questions Sam will present Permaway – A new and extremely flexible model of management, which redefines ownership and governance bringing both into the modern age.  He presents this model as a theoretical answer to the question above. And while it is as yet untested you will see a strong focus on the practical as the process of establishing the first Permaway community, and his many anecdotes involving corporate mercenaries, esoteric hippies and unwieldy anarchists, will reveal.
